Brown Doubles Down on Sununu for Ducking the WMUR Debate

Brown: “You know, John can't even show up for a debate, [...] How is he going to stand up when there's an issue for New Hampshire?”

U.S. Senate candidate John Sununu is ducking the biggest primary debate stage in New Hampshire, frustrating voters and his primary opponent Scott Brown, who continues to slam Sununu, saying he’s “scared,” “not showing up,” and “doing it the D.C. way.”

Granite Staters are upset by Sununu’s refusal to take questions alongside Brown on WMUR’s debate stage, with one caller to Nightside with Dan Rea radio show telling Sununu his decision “comes off as somewhat disingenuous and, you know, dare I say entitled.”

• SCOTT BROWN: “You know, John [Sununu] can't even show up for a debate, and he wants to represent us. Are you kidding me? How is he going to fight back against, against John Thune? How is he going to stand up when there's an issue for New Hampshire? Right, that he is told by the president to vote for? And he says, ‘Okay, sir, I'll do that.’ He's not going to be able to stand up to him.”
   
• BROWN: “Yeah, we went to a parade together. He was there, and I was way down there, or a barbecue, or we went to an event where we were all there. We're all there, and we got like two minutes to talk. That's not showing up with Scott Brown and debating the issues. For him to go up there and lie about that, it's misleading, it's a disservice to you as voters. You should know where we stand on the issues.”
   
• BROWN: “He's doing that because he's scared. Let's be real. He didn't do well in the last debate, so-called, and you know we're, we're running circles. We're out here working every single day. And you know, I'm disappointed, but I'm not surprised. And we've had about 2,500 voters say they're voting, voting for me as a result of that, and they're continuing to come.”
   
• BROWN: “What's the number one job of an elected official? It's to show up, to look you in the eye, answer any and all questions, we may disagree, and try to get your support. That's the New Hampshire way. He keeps saying, ‘Oh, the New Hampshire way. I'm doing it the New Hampshire way.’ No, he's not. He's doing it the D.C. way. That's the D.C. way. Telling them what to do, how to do it, how high to jump. It's insulting to the people of New Hampshire.”
   
• BROWN: “And you should call MUR and say, ‘Put a table, put a podium up, put his name on it, and he will definitely show up and send him a message too.”

Listen to a radio caller suggest Sununu’s being “entitled” by skipping the primary debate: 

• CALLER: “I just wanted to follow up on, on what you were talking about before regarding the WMUR debate. You know, I think it's, I think it's interesting that, that Mr. Sununu says he wants to focus on talking to voters and focus on getting his message out, but he won't debate in one of the most well-known forums possible in, in New Hampshire. It's such a tradition, so it comes off as somewhat disingenuous and, you know, dare I say entitled. And I think a lot of people up here are talking about this because of that.”
